What is THCV?

We are in a sort of hemp renaissance era at the moment, with new discoveries pertaining to the plant being made seemingly every day.  Right now, there’s a lot of focus on federally legal hemp-derived tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) compounds, with delta 8, delta 10 and, most recently, THC-O-Acetate (THC-O) making a splash on the hemp market.  Now, the cannabinoid that has gotten the community talking is tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV).

Like many of hemp’s cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabivarin is a minor cannabinoid. And, because of this, we don’t know as much about it as we do with CBD.  However, studies are emerging pertaining to the properties of THCV that are making it a cannabinoid that may be worth seeking out.  Also, there are reasons to predict that it will be a very popular submarket of the hemp industry in the near future due to the potential of what it can offer.

THCV: What’s All The Hype About?

Did you know that tetrahydrocannabivarin is one of over 100 different cannabinoids found in the hemp plant?  For those who are still new to the world of hemp, it’s important to understand the unique function of cannabinoids like THCV. That, along with cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), cannabigerol (CBG), delta-8, and so on.  As cannabinoids, these compounds are the only ones in nature that directly support the endocannabinoid system. This is a bodily system found in every mammal which is in charge of keeping the body in homeostasis.  The ECS has cannabinoid receptors all throughout, and each cannabinoid in hemp binds to specific cannabinoid receptors that are given the role of regulating individual bodily processes.  Some cannabinoids work more directly with the nervous system, others with the immune system, and so on, through this binding process.

THCV is also one of the most lowly occurring cannabinoids in the hemp plant, which has a lot to do with why it’s so new to the world of cannabis research.  That being said, there simply aren’t a ton of studies on its properties just yet.  But, research is underway to uncover its potential effects in order to get a better idea of how to use it to support the ECS.

Being a homologue of tetrahydrocannabinol means that THCV has very similar genetic information as THC. But, just enough differences to change the way in which it reacts in the body.  It also has a higher boiling point than traditional THC. So, it must be vaporized at a higher temperature (420 degrees). Or, even decarboxylated using more intensive methods.

What are the Properties of THCV?

Like we mentioned, the properties of THCV are still being discovered, but we have enough reason to believe that it offers many properties similar to other cannabinoids, like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, appetite-suppressing, neuroprotectant and antimicrobial properties.  Of course, it’s also a psychoactive cannabinoid, and it may have regulating effects on mood.

Studies do exist on this cannabinoid despite being quite limited.  Researchers are particularly interested in its potential role in managing weight and obesity. Not to mention, its potential anti-inflammatory properties and properties pertaining to the neurological system. Essentially, like many other cannabinoids, it may have a role in maintaining healthy neurological function through improving the behavior of neurons and neural pathways. This in turn could be useful to those with cognitive disorders.  However, no majorly conclusive research has been completed just yet.

Is THCV Legal?

Of course, it is important to know the legality of a cannabinoid before attempting to purchase it. Especially, since hemp-related laws can vary from state to state.  Being a hemp-derived cannabinoid that’s not delta 9 THC, tetrahydrocannabivarin is protected under federal law, meaning that federally, it’s legal to buy and possess THCV products.  Some states have banned alternative forms of THC including delta 8.

In these following states, it’s likely that THCV is ultimately considered illegal:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • New York
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah

How is THCV Made?

Tetrahydrocannabivarin is not a synthesized cannabinoid, made in a lab, as it’s a naturally occurring compound in hemp.  Because it’s such a minor cannabinoid, specialized extraction methods must be utilized to acquire adequate extracts of it.  Distillation is probably going to be the method of choice, which applies distilled steam to the plant until all that’s left is a purified form of THCV.  This is how delta 8, another very minor cannabinoid, is turned into a concentrated extract.

THCV is so new to the market, you won’t be able to find a wide array of THCV-based products just yet.  Still, some companies are releasing products with concentrated levels of THCV, with vape cartridges being the most popular option.  Because standard TCHV extracts have the same physical properties as CBD and delta 8 extracts, you can expect tetrahydrocannabivarin to eventually be available in all kinds of familiar forms like tinctures, flower, edibles, capsules, and even topicals.

Lab Reports

Like all hemp products, THCV extracts should be third-party tested before being sold by a company.  In other words, if you have an interest in purchasing a particular THCV formula, look for their lab reports that indicate that the product was tested by an unbiased source. This is the only way to know that it’s pure, high in quality, and legitimate.

Reputation

Yes, you should only buy tetrahydrocannabivarin from a company that already has a good reputation throughout our industry.  Why?  Because with THCV still being a niche product. That means companies may sell fake THCV in a shady attempt to satisfy demand.  Because most people are unfamiliar with this cannabinoid’s effects, it can be hard to know whether or not what they are using is high in quality, or even authentic.

Overall, THCV Has Tons of Promise as a Cannabinoid

Many people are interested in THCV’s psychoactive properties. Although, it’s clear that the compound actually has a lot of potential. Specifically, in terms of the effects that it can offer to the human system, especially when taken routinely.  We are excited about the findings that will be coming out in the future that show exactly what this compound can do. But, in the meantime, you can explore the studies that have been completed.
