Marijuana Offers Help for Epilepsy, Seizure Disorders

Doctors and patients have found that using marijuana offers help for epilepsy, seizure disorders, and other neurological conditions, and while this has been studied for a many years it’s not without controversy.

Early evidence from lab studies, anecdotal reports, and little clinical research studies over a number of years recommend that cannabidiol (CBD) could potentially help control seizures. Research study on CBD has been tough to do and taken some time due to federal policies and minimal access to cannabidiol. There are also many financial and time constraints. In the last few years, a variety of studies have shown the benefit of specific plant-based CBD item in dealing with specific groups of individuals with epilepsy who have not reacted to standard therapies.

Marijuana Offers Help for Epilepsy: Epidolex

Marijuana Offers Help for Epilepsy, Seizure Disorders

On June 25, 2018, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved EPIDIOLEX ® (cannabidiol, CBD) oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with 2 epilepsy syndromes – Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome – in people 2 years of age or older. Epidiolex represents a brand-new medication option for kids with these types of epilepsy. It is likewise the very first FDA approved medication to treat seizures in Dravet syndrome.

New Indication for Seizure Disorders:

The FDA recently approved a new indication for Epidolex in the treatment of epilepsy and seizure disorders. Here is the excerpt of that statement:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in patients one year of age and older. Epidiolex was previously approved for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome (DS). This is the only FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from cannabis. It is also the second FDA approval of a drug for the treatment of seizures associated with TSC.”
