Which Well-Known Actors and Actresses Were Also Cannabis Advocates?

It really isn’t surprising that Hollywood stars of past and present have at least dabbled in marijuana use, with weed being a fairly common thing to have around, especially in California state, where its usage has always been more common than other parts of America.

Today, we are going to talk about some of the most well-known Hollywood A-listers who did or continue to smoke marijuana.

18 Hollywood Cannabis Advocates

#1: Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman has been outspoken about the benefits of marijuana, as he himself suffers from fibromyalgia and finds that it helps him manage his pain and energy levels.  Freeman has been advocating for legalization for quite some time and talks about his personal experiences with weed in interviews regularly.

#2: Jennifer Aniston

Hollywood’s girl next-door is an open pothead, who has been smoking for at least most of her career.  Known for her laid-back attitude and perfect tan, Aniston was the subject of almost every teenage boy’s dreams in the 90s and early 2000s during her stint on Friends.  Now she maintains her career as an actress and enjoys puffing away on the good stuff.

#3: Lady Gaga

Sure, Lady Gaga is best known for her singing career, but she is also an award-winning actress, appearing on both the big and small screen.  Gaga is incredibly open about her weed use, and says that it helps her with chronic pain, depression, and anxiety.  Gaga encourages others to explore it for the same reasons and enjoys the way that it enhances her creativity.

#4: Seth Rogen

Of course, Seth Rogen’s appearance on our list should not surprise anyone.  After all, the actor has been in plenty of movies that revolved around weed, including Pineapple Express, a film released in 2008 with the title sharing the name of a popular strain.  Rogen is a vocal cannabis advocate who wants weed to be explored for use in dementia patients, and pushes for legalization by sharing information about cannabis while dispelling myths about it along the way.

#5: Woody Harrelson

Another iconic stoner is Woody Harrelson, and although he quit a couple of years ago, he spent most of his career getting high.  Many actors have stories about smoking with him, and he continues to be one of the most famous potheads of all time.

#6: Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn, and Kurt Russell

In an interview a few years back, actress Kate Hudson revealed that she has gotten high with her parents, which would imply that both Kurt and Goldie are stoners.  After all, their heyday was the 70s, when just about everyone in Los Angeles was enjoying at least the occasional joint.  How often Hudson herself smokes is unknown, but we love that she shared this story about two Hollywood legends.

#7: Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt has been smoking weed since at least the 90s, and his marijuana use has been the subject of tabloids for a long time, less because it is controversial and more because his celebrity status has made fans eager to learn about what he does when he’s not on screen.  Pitt also gave us one of the most iconic and hilarious portrayals of a stoner in the film, “True Romance” in 1993.

#8: Bing Crosby

Yes, that Bing Crosby.  The famous crooner and actor was introduced to weed by jazz legend Louis Armstrong, who seemed to have gotten many people into cannabis over his years as a celebrity singer.  Crosby developed a weed routine, always having a stash in his home that he could enjoy after a long day on set or in the studio.

#9: Whoopi Goldberg

Today, we mostly know Whoopi for her work on talk shows, but she is a very accomplished actress who gave an unbelievable portrayal of an abused woman during the Jim Crow era in “The Color Purple.”  Goldberg is another outspoken weed activist who even opened up her own cannabis company and swears by it for her headaches caused by glaucoma.

#10: Robert Mitchum

Old Hollywood star Robert Mitchum was known for carrying “marijuana cigarettes” around on set and was even shortly in jail for possession back in 1949.  His star status of the time seemed to be unaffected, and he went on to be a leading man throughout the 1950s.

#11: Tony Curtis

The father of Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Curtis was a leading man throughout the 1950s, and quite a prolific actor during his time.  Curtis was arrested in 1970 for possession, which would indicate that he dabbled more than once in cannabis use.

#12: Marilyn Monroe

Screen icon Marilyn Monroe is as known for her films as her troubled life, as she ultimately died of an overdose in the early 1960s while she was still at the height of her fame.  Monroe was once filmed at home smoking a joint, and one can gather from this that she was, in fact, a stoner just like the rest of us.  After all, what better way to relax after spending all day in front of a camera?

#13: Barbara Streisand

Barbara Streisand is open about her marijuana use, and supposedly has smoked real joints on stage during her Vegas performances, despite claiming that they were fake.  Streisand has spoken about stage fright before, so it’s not a reach to guess that weed has helped her calm down and feel more comfortable in front of an audience.

#14: Ava Gardner

Ava Gardner was one of the bombshells of the 1940s, and her looks were matched by a natural acting talent.  Gardner was introduced to weed by none other than Robert Mitchum during filming and ended up maintaining a supply on a regular basis, enjoying it along with a drink.

#15: Bob Denver

Anyone who ever watched Gilligan’s Island might be surprised to learn that the show’s star, Bob Denver, was a pothead.  He was arrested for possession back in 1998, and said that fellow co-star Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann, is the one who got him into cannabis.

#16: Peter Sellers

British acting icon Peter Sellers has been vocal about his love for cannabis, and he began smoking it at least as early as the first half of the 1960s.  Sellers has spoken to many fellow cannabis users about their positive experiences with it and has found it to be helpful in numerous ways.

#17: Steve McQueen

Few actors have embodied rugged masculinity like Steve McQueen, whose movies are still lauded as classics.  Reports from friends are that McQueen smoked on the daily, which seemingly never had an impact on his career, as he was one of the most in-demand actors of his day.

#18: Rodney Dangerfield

Comedic legend Rodney Dangerfield was, according to his own accounts, a heavy marijuana user.  He wrote in his autobiography that weed has been one of the loves of his life, and he used it regularly.

Hollywood is no stranger to marijuana, as legends have been using it since the first movie sets were built in Los Angeles.  Some of our favorite stars, from the old days all the way to the present, have helped destigmatize cannabis by being open supporters of legalization and medicinal use.  Their influence has helped make weed a more legitimate industry, and their usage makes them more relatable.
