In Maine, from Augusta to Bangor, marijuana is legal for both medicinal and recreational purposes.  This state has since permitted dispensaries to open up throughout, in order to accommodate growing demand for cannabis among adult residents.  While these dispensaries are a convenient way to stock up on marijuana, there are many people in the state who, for various reasons, would prefer to have their weed delivered straight to their door. So, the question is, is weed delivery legal in Maine then?

What is Weed Delivery?

Weed delivery is a rather self-explanatory service that functions a lot like food delivery that exists in your local area.  Weed customers can visit a website of a dispensary, or a third-party website that aggregates marijuana products from a number of local dispensaries, and then place an order for the cannabis products that they wish to purchase.  Then, those items are delivered directly to the customer’s door, usually within a couple hours, with the delivery service keeping the customer updated throughout the experience.

It goes without saying that weed delivery services serve a crucial function in local cannabis markets.  They allow disabled individuals to have easy access to marijuana products, as many are too immobilized to get themselves to a local dispensary.  They also allow non-disabled users to enjoy the convenience of not having to leave their homes to stock up on their favorite cannabis products.

Of course, each state regulates weed delivery programs in their own way, and may have restrictions on hours, purchase amounts or whether or not a medical card is required upon purchase.

Is Weed Delivery Legal In Maine?

Maine permitted adult-use recreational marijuana sales back in 2016, which did not go into effect until 2019 as state lawmakers scrambled to develop a fully regulated industry.  Medical marijuana though, was legalized in the state long before recreational use, and they have seen quite a rise in marijuana sales over the years as a result.

Currently, it is illegal for a business to deliver marijuana to a person’s home for recreational use.  Therefore, delivery options exist only for medical patients who can prove that they are entitled to this service by showing their medical card upon delivery.  Medical patients can purchase no more than 2.5 ounces of flower and 2.5 ounces of concentrates in a single day for delivery, as these restrictions are possession limits that have existed since medicinal marijuana laws were first enacted in the state.

The state has not revisited laws for recreational delivery for some time, but as more and more states to permit this option for adult users, it may be on the table once again in the near future.  Presently, those who wish to use marijuana recreationally are required to purchase it directly from a dispensary, and must show proof of age via a state-registered ID.

What is the Delivery Process Like?

If you are a medical marijuana patient with a state-issued card permitting you to purchase cannabis, then you can take advantage of weed delivery in Maine, as, like we said, recreational users cannot yet have cannabis delivered to their homes.  Of course, this means that you’ll need to have your medical card ready, or else you will not be able to make your purchase online.

The process is very straightforward, as it’s really no different from making any other kind of purchase online.

  1. Find a nearby dispensary that does offer a delivery option.
  2. Simply add products to your cart.
  3. When it is time to check out, you’ll be asked to provide proof of a medical card, along with your home address and a means for contacting you, should something happen with your order.
  4. Then, you will be given an estimated delivery time, which is usually no longer than 3 hours. Local traffic can interfere with how long it takes to receive your delivery.
  5. From there, you can simply sit at home and wait for your marijuana to arrive. You’ll likely need to provide your medical card in-person to verify that you are legally permitted to buy marijuana via delivery.

Is Weed Delivery Safe?

Of course, one of the first questions asked about weed delivery is whether or not it’s safe.  It’s important to know that permitting weed delivery under state law would not happen if it weren’t for very strict regulations developed carefully by lawmakers.  As it stands, in order for a dispensary to operate in the state of Maine, they must verify that they are selling genuine cannabis products by submitting information including third-party lab analyses.  What this means is that if you are purchasing an order from delivery from a real dispensary, then you have nothing to worry about in terms of the safety of the products being purchased.

Maine will also be working hard to regulate the middleman, which is the driver providing the delivery service.  They will make sure that dispensaries work with drivers who are authorized to carry marijuana to customers without interfering with the safety of the process in any way.

Is Weed Delivery Expensive?

Rest assured that no legitimate dispensary will charge an astronomical delivery fee.  The delivery fee will likely vary between businesses but will simply reflect the transportation cost to cover the drivers.

Note: There is a tax on legal weed in this state, which helps fund the enforcement of regulations that keep the industry safe for everyone.

Weed Delivery is Very Effective in The Pine Tree State

Overall, weed delivery is an enormously helpful service for adult cannabis users who are not able to maintain their supplies by traveling to and from a dispensary.  As Maine’s weed delivery program continues to evolve, we encourage you to read up on state laws to see how the industry changes in the coming months and years.  For the time-being, only medical patients can receive weed via delivery, but that may very well change sooner than you think.
