Did you know Michigan was the 10th state in the country to make marijuana legal for adult recreational use?  Well, now you do.  In fact, since then, the local cannabis industry has proven to be a massive success, while boosting the state’s general economy.  Legal weed has allowed for a safer cannabis market, with regulations in place to protect both customers and businesses.  What about weed delivery?  Basically, is weed delivery legal in Michigan, aka have cannabis products delivered straight to the doors of Michiganians in cities and towns such as Detroit, Lansing, Ann Harbor, or even Dearborn?

What is Weed Delivery?

Weed delivery is relatively self-explanatory.  The same way that you can order food from a local restaurant and have it delivered to your home, weed delivery allows customers to place orders online from local dispensaries and simply wait for their orders to arrive at the door.  It’s a highly convenient way to purchase marijuana, and also allows easy access to cannabis among those who are disabled and have a much harder time getting over to a nearby dispensary.

Of course, weed delivery can vary from state to state.  And in fact, not all states that have legalized cannabis permit a delivery program to exist, at least not yet as they iron out the details.  In some states, there may only be certain hours during which delivery services can operate, or there may be restrictions on how much marijuana a person can purchase at one time.

Also, states that have not yet permitted recreational use among adults will almost certainly require a medical card during the process to verify that the customer can legally access marijuana.

Is Weed Delivery Legal in Michigan?

Recreational weed delivery has been legal in Michigan since 2019.  Since then, it has proven to be a huge success for both customers and businesses.  Prior to 2019, MI had already managed an efficient delivery system for medical marijuana patients.  The law states that a resident must provide valid ID at the time of purchase and delivery, proving that they are least 21 years of age.  Delivery persons must also be at least 21 years of age.

In terms of purchase limits, recreational users cannot buy more than 2.5 ounces of flower at a time, or more than 15 grams of a cannabis concentrate.

One hiccup that Michiganders are discovering is that many municipalities within Michigan have banned marijuana use within their borders, meaning that those wishing to purchase cannabis products may simply not be able to due to a lack of nearby dispensaries as a result of varying local laws.  While residents can legally have weed delivered to them without any real hassle, the problem is finding a delivery service nearby that can actually complete the process.  However, it’s anticipated that more dispensaries will open up as many local areas finally allow them to operate, making weed delivery a far more lucrative industry throughout the state.

What is the Delivery Process Like?

Ordering weed online for delivery is a lot like shopping for any other kind of item through an online marketplace.

  1. Find a dispensary that will deliver to you, which may take a bit of time as not many exist in this state just yet.
  2. Simply add items to your cart just like you normally would when placing a food order.
  3. Once you’re done filling your cart, check out and provide your home address along with contact information so that the business can get in touch with you should they need to.
  4. Provide verification that you are at least 21 years of age, so have this verification ready. DO NOT attempt to buy as a minor using a fake ID, as you will almost certainly get caught as technology has gotten so advanced that retailers can tell right away whether or not an ID is valid.
  5. Once you’ve placed your order, a delivery time window will be provided, and you can simply wait for your cannabis to arrive at your doorstep. You will likely need to show your ID in-person to verify that it is you who placed the order.

Is Weed Delivery Safe?

Rest assured that Michigan lawmakers have worked hard to ensure that weed delivery is a safe process for all involved.  We know that many people still remember the days of “delivery” implying black market dealers showing up at your home, but those days are, by and large, well behind us.  The state works closely with dispensaries to maintain strict regulations about products sold, and even goes so far as to maintain certain standards for delivery drivers so that interactions with them are completely safe for customers.

A main why it takes so long for delivery to be enacted after a law is passed is because of the lengthy process of ensuring safety for businesses as well as consumers.

Note: Weed delivery should only come from a licensed dispensary in Michigan, as this means that this business has all of their cannabis products tested to prove that they are safe for consumption.

Is Weed Delivery Expensive?

Weed delivery will not cost dramatically more than buying in person at a dispensary, but you will be almost definitely paying a delivery fee which covers the transportation expenses to make up for the convenience of not having to leave your home.  Likely, each dispensary has their own delivery charge based on their own personal means for delivering products to your home.  There are taxes on products that come from a dispensary, which mostly pay for the processes involved in regulating products to ensure that they are safe.

Ultimately, anyone who wants to purchase weed through delivery can do so legally thanks to Michigan’s lenient cannabis laws.  While some regions are struggling to open dispensaries, overall, it is not hard to find a dispensary that will deliver to your door, whether you are a medical or recreational user.  And, as more dispensaries pop up in different neighborhoods, it will only get easier to take advantage of this awesome service that makes cannabis users’ lives much, much easier.
