These yummy snacks originated in India, Israel, and Sri Lanka, but this dish has evolved over time into many unique variations.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 medium potatoes, boiled and diced
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
Going Step by Step
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, and vegetable oil. Mix well until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Gradually add water and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and pliable. Cover the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- Add the mixed vegetables and diced potatoes to the pan. Stir well.
- Sprinkle the ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt over the vegetable mixture. Mix everything together and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Divide the dough into small balls and roll each ball into a thin circle.
- Cut each circle in half and fold one half into a cone shape, overlapping the edges.
- Fill the cone with the vegetable mixture and seal the open edge by pressing it firmly.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.
- 10. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan for frying.
- 11. Carefully place the samosas into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy.
- 12. Remove the samosas from the oil and drain excess oil on a paper towel.
- 13. Serve hot with your favorite chutney or sauce.
- Give it a try and enjoy!
Tips
- Make sure the dough is well-rested to achieve a crispy texture.
- Adjust the spices according to your taste preferences.
- You can add other vegetables like bell peppers or spinach to the filling for added flavor.
- If you prefer a healthier alternative, you can also bake the samosas instead of frying them.
